Where Ciudad Vieja is
Ciudad Vieja is Montevideo's old town, occupying the tip of the peninsula the city was originally founded on, with the modern downtown and the rest of the city spreading east from it. It's a compact, walkable grid of 18th- and 19th-century streets, and Primuseum sits inside it, on the corner of Pérez Castellano and Washington, a short block or two in from the water on most approaches.
Getting there from the port or downtown
Montevideo's passenger port sits right beside Ciudad Vieja — close enough that cruise passengers can walk from the pier into the old town in a few minutes rather than needing a shuttle. From Centro, Pocitos, Punta Carretas or the other central neighbourhoods further out, a taxi or rideshare is the straightforward option, generally fifteen to twenty-five minutes depending on traffic and time of evening; some GetYourGuide packages include hotel pickup from those areas, so check what yours covers before assuming you'll need to arrange your own transport.
What time to actually arrive
Doors open at 20:30 and the whole evening — dinner, the band, the dancing — runs about three hours in total. Arriving on time matters more here than at a show with a separate box office and a fixed curtain time; you're being seated for the start of a shared dinner service, not queuing for a theatre door that will let you in whenever you turn up.
Why the four nights matter
Primuseum runs Thursday to Sunday only, not nightly like some larger tango venues. If you're in Montevideo for a short stopover — a cruise call, a weekend on the way to or from Buenos Aires — check your dates land on one of those four nights before building an evening in Ciudad Vieja around it, rather than discovering on a Monday or Tuesday that it isn't running.
Cruise-ship days
Because the port is an easy walk from Ciudad Vieja, a ship in town on one of the four open nights can fill the room on its own, leaving no walk-up tables for anyone who didn't book ahead. If your visit coincides with a cruise call — check the Montevideo port's published ship schedule if you're unsure — book further ahead rather than deciding on the day and hoping.
What to wear
There's no published dress code for the evening. Smart-casual is a safe read for a preserved 1870s dining room with a live band rather than a stage show — you won't be underdressed in anything you'd wear to a nice dinner, and there's no need to dress for a formal theatre night. Montevideo evenings can turn cool even in the middle of summer, especially with the wind off the river, so it's worth having a light layer for the walk back to a taxi or your hotel.
